Maria Petit

Previous life:

Commercial Director, Motorola Ltd., London, United Kingdom

New Life:

Co-founder of JAM Language Ltd. A publishing company specializing in language ‘fun’ learning material for children and adults. Besides starting the new company this year, I took time out to play polo, study Arabic in Yemen and spend quality time with friends around the world.

Motivation for change:

I was made redundant in February 2008 which actually sweetened the deal since I was able to leave with a redundancy package (one year’s salary). For at least 6 months prior to this I was becoming disillusioned by the chronic changing leadership at Motorola Ltd. In addition, for the first time in my career, I realized the glass ceiling was not a myth, but a reality.

How she did it:

I took time to think about what I really wanted to do and identified my GOAL. Then I set milestones and target deadlines. This was important to do because otherwise the days will pass, the months and before you know it years with no action toward your goal.

Challenges

Working for myself is fantastic because I have endless flexibility. I work from anywhere, anytime or not at all! I get to decide. Of course, the success of my business will be determined by how well I prioritize and maximize my time. My return will be based on the amount of work I put in. Its a challenge because it’s very easy to let deadlines slip. I have to be ALOT more disciplined.

Advantages:

I work from anywhere, anytime, or not at all! I have endless creativity and decision making power over the entire business (luckily my business partner and I think alike!) I am involved in all aspects of the business and not limited to just one function.

Advice:

Take time to think about what you really want to do, identify your GOAL and set deadlines.  Otherwise the days and months will pass, and before you know it years with no action toward what you want.
